The house

La Vieille France opened in 2010 with a simple idea: to pay tribute to the cooking of childhood. Sunday cooking, dishes left to simmer and desserts nobody turns down. It is a warm estaminet with a Flemish atmosphere, where you eat generously and without fuss.

The upstairs room is known for its copper pans hung from floor to ceiling, its dried flowers on the beams and its red napkins. Below, a vaulted cellar, air-conditioned in summer, which makes the charm of the house and can be booked in full for a group.

In fine weather, a few tables go out onto the terrace on rue de Gand.

Grandma's dishes

Chicken waterzooi first, a Flemish dish cooked in broth with carrot, celery, leek and crème fraîche. Then chicken gratinéed with Maroilles, carbonade flamande, potjevleesch and andouillette.

For starters, bone marrow and beef cheek in jelly, two dishes many menus have forgotten; the ficelle picarde, a ham and mushroom pancake, is served as a main course.

Moules-frites come with the chef's sauce or Maroilles sauce. The chef's were voted best mussels of the 2025 braderie.

Dishes come with fresh fries from the region, salad, rice or the vegetables of the moment.

To finish, a chocolate fondant, a brioche perdue, or a café noyé: a scoop of vanilla ice cream drowned in a coffee, with whipped cream.
